Girardin Jean-Louis

Dr . Girardin Jean-Louis is Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Miami and Director of the Center for Translational Sleep and Circadian Sciences and the NIH-funded PRIME Institute on Behavioral Medicine and Sleep Disorders. Dr. Jean-Louis has been involved in several important NIH-funded studies, generating over 400 publications, primarily in sleep and cardio-metabolic diseases, circadian rhythm, aging, and health disparities. His research findings have appeared in over 150 scientific conference proceedings and book chapters and 275 peer-reviewed scientific journals. The overarching goal of his research is to address patient-level, provider-level, and system-level barriers hindering adoption of healthful practices. His research focuses on the application of personalized behavioral models to enhance treatment adherence to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and early mortality. Dr. Jean-Louis’ research addresses psychosocial and environmental determinants of health behavior preventing access to adequate care in communities, which are disproportionately burdened by adverse cardiovascular and brain health outcomes. His current studies aim to delineate barriers hindering diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related metabolic diseases and brain injury among older adults and to ascertain efficacy of behavioral models in enhancing adherence to recommended therapies. Studies also aim to engage patients as well as community providers and stakeholders in developing messages to promote health literacy at the community level. His research and educational programs link community health promotion to the healthcare system, thus achieving objectives of the national mandate to increase health and wellness in vulnerable communities.
